Five stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD)

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) created a guideline to help identify the five stages of kidney disease.  Each stage calls for different tests and treatments.  To determine how well the kidneys are functioning and the stage of kidney disease, a blood test and other factors are calculated to determine the Glomerular rate (GFR).

Chronic Kidney Disease: What does it all mean?

The kidneys play a major role in keeping your body healthy. They work as filters to help remove wastes from the blood.  The kidneys also help to control blood pressure and maintain healthy bones.  Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) often proceeds as a slow progression over a period of years. If CKD is caught early, medicines and lifestyle changes may help slow its progress.

Why is nutrition important?  When you have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and your kidneys are not working properly, certain foods may need to be limited.  This is because the kidneys can no longer get rid of excesses of minerals taken in from the foods eaten. What you eat and drink can help slow down chronic kidney disease.  With kidney disease some foods are better for your kidneys than others.

Nutrition for people with CKD.  Proper nutrition for people with CKD is very important.  For people in early stages, a lower sodium diet may be prescribed if blood pressure is high.  If you are in later stages, other nutrients such as potassium and phosphorus might need to be restricted.  Your doctor will order blood tests to monitor your levels of these minerals.
